Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: CHSL's Antibody Engineering, Phage Display Immune Repertoire Analysis to be held on 10/17/17 - 10/30/17.
Advances in the generation and selection of antibodies from combinatorial libraries allow for the rapid production of antibodies from immune and non-immune sources. This intensive laboratory/lecture course will focus on the construction of combinatorial antibody libraries expressed on the surface of filamentous phage and the subsequent selection of desired antibodies from the library. Students will learn the theoretical and practical aspects of constructing combinatorial libraries from immune and non-immune sources as well as the construction of synthetic antibody libraries. Antigen-specific recombinant monoclonal antibodies will be selected from the library. Production, purification and characterization of antibody fragments expressed in E. coli will also be covered.
The lecture series, presented by course faculty and a number of invited speakers, will emphasize theory and practice of antibody display technologies, expression of antibodies in E. coli and mammalian cells, antibody structure and function, bacterial display of antibodies and other ligand-binding domains, the immunobiology of the antibody response, and the use of monoclonal antibodies for therapy including the design of chimeric antigen receptor T cells. We will also discuss principles and protocols for generation and analysis of immune repertoires determined by Next Generation Sequencing.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Cardiovascular Review Course for Cardiology Boards and Recertification to be held on 8/27/17 - 8/31/17
Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Review Course for Cardiology Boards and Recertification (CVBR) will provide the cardiologist and internist with an overview of all aspects of cardiovascular medicine. Well-known experts in each field will give in-depth, engaging lectures on state-of-the-art subjects in cardiovascular medicine. Each lecture will be followed by a question and answer session with an audience response system. Although this course is designed specifically to prepare the cardiovascular specialist for the cardiovascular boards, it will also provide the practicing cardiologist or internist with an update on the latest knowledge and advances in cardiovascular medicine.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
We have included a sampling of our 164 CVBR course objectives for your review. Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the etiology and pathophysiology of restrictive and other non-dilated cardiomyopathies and use this information to effectively diagnose and manage patients
- Recognize and diagnose venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism using the appropriate algorithm for VTE diagnosis based on a pretest probability of disease assessment strategy
- Identify cardiovascular disease risk factors in patients without known CAD and use them to predict the risk of future coronary events
- Identify the classification and mechanisms of action of antiarrhythmic agents
- Explain the physiologic changes that occur with pregnancy
For a full list of our course objectives, please contact us at cvcme@mayo.edu.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course is intended for cardiologists, cardiovascular fellows, and general internists who want both a live forum and online platform to continue learning year-round. This option includes both admission to a 5-day live course in Rochester, Minnesota and the use of the online personalized and adaptive course before, during, and after your attendance (one year subscription).

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: FASEB Conference on Lysophospholipid and Related Mediators - From Bench to Clinic to be held on 8/20/17 - 8/25/17
This is the leading international conference in lysophospholipid biology, attracting participants from all continents. This SRC will focus on the physiological and pathophysiological roles of sphingosine 1-phosphate, lysophosphatidic acid and other lysophospholipids. New and established basic scientists, clinical researchers, academics and industry partners are brought together to share expertise and foster collaboration, thereby accelerating the pace of scientific discovery and facilitating translation from early research to clinical practice. Indeed, the development of Fingolimod, the first oral treatment for multiple sclerosis, is an excellent example of this, as first reported at this conference in 2001.
The conference provides opportunities for substantive interactions between early-stage and established basic, translational and pharmaceutical investigators with an interest in lysophospholipid biology in health and disease. Presentations and posters (with several prizes) will range from molecular aspects of lysophospholipid biology through to emerging therapeutics, genetic and disease models and molecular modelling. Late-breaking scientific advances and junior investigators will feature on the final program, which includes keynote lectures, the Journal of Lipid Research Lectureship and a careers workshop for early career scientists.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: NYU Nature Conference on Neurogenetics to be held on 8/9/17 - 8/11/17
The application of genetic and genomic approaches to neuroscientific questions is poised to rapidly advance our understanding of how genes influence brain function and disease risk. Recent technological developments in genetics now allow the large scale cataloguing of genetic variation, from common and rare single nucleotide changes to non-coding, regulatory mutations, and how these are related to health and disease. In neuroscience, new tools for monitoring and manipulating neuronal activity, circumscribed circuits and specific cell types allow interrogating the mechanisms of perception, cognition and action. Despite advances on both fronts, there still remains a significant gap between genetics and neuroscience, limiting the potential for this exciting and important area of research to provide new neurobiological insights. The goal of this Nature Conference is to bridge the gap between neuroscientists and geneticists and provide a forum for discussing recent advances and innovative strategies for future research in neurogenetics. The conference will cover the breadth of neurogenetics—from genome-wide association studies for complex psychiatric disorders to mechanistic investigations of genes underlying behavioral traits in model organisms. We hope that this conference will be the first of many and will facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at developing a more integrated understanding of how genes influence behavior, neuronal development and neurological disease.
