Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Keystone Symposia: Maternal-Fetal Crosstalk – Harmony vs. Conflict to be held on 10/04/17-10/08/17.
The interactions between the mother and the fetus during the progression of normal pregnancy involve trade-offs, or even conflicts, between factors that improve maternal health and those that support fetal development and growth. These may lead to selective evolutionary pressures that differ among species, and result in intriguing differences in reproductive strategies that enhance maternal-fetal biological harmony, and mitigate conflict. Intriguing strategies to balance these pressures include imprinting, coincident with placentation. Adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as miscarriage, preterm birth, preeclampsia and intrauterine growth restriction, are heterogeneous, and gaps remain in understanding how imbalances between maternal and fetal adaptations contribute to these disorders. The goal of this meeting is to bring together investigators from diverse disciplines who investigate maternal and fetal factors that shape pregnancy outcomes by exploring how these systems work together or are at odds. The conference will aim to develop these concepts, illuminating developmental, genomic/epigenomic, immune, microbial and metabolic factors as well as consider how acute exposures during pregnancy, such as infection, shape maternal-fetal outcomes. Understanding the biology underpinning these considerations will contribute to better diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention during pregnancy. The presentations will address critical gaps in our knowledge of maternal/fetal harmony and conflict, and target paths to improve understanding of issues related to social, economic and geographic inequality that predispose some groups to enhanced risk during pregnancy. A better understanding of the biology, and development of new collaborative possibilities and paths to improved clinical outcomes, are primary goals of the meeting.

Spotlight on Science Meetings, Conferences and Events brings you information on the following: Cardiovascular Review Course for Cardiology Boards and Recertification to be held on 8/27/17 - 8/31/17
Mayo Clinic Cardiovascular Review Course for Cardiology Boards and Recertification (CVBR) will provide the cardiologist and internist with an overview of all aspects of cardiovascular medicine. Well-known experts in each field will give in-depth, engaging lectures on state-of-the-art subjects in cardiovascular medicine. Each lecture will be followed by a question and answer session with an audience response system. Although this course is designed specifically to prepare the cardiovascular specialist for the cardiovascular boards, it will also provide the practicing cardiologist or internist with an update on the latest knowledge and advances in cardiovascular medicine.
COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES
We have included a sampling of our 164 CVBR course objectives for your review. Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe the etiology and pathophysiology of restrictive and other non-dilated cardiomyopathies and use this information to effectively diagnose and manage patients
- Recognize and diagnose venous thromboembolism (VTE) and pulmonary embolism using the appropriate algorithm for VTE diagnosis based on a pretest probability of disease assessment strategy
- Identify cardiovascular disease risk factors in patients without known CAD and use them to predict the risk of future coronary events
- Identify the classification and mechanisms of action of antiarrhythmic agents
- Explain the physiologic changes that occur with pregnancy
For a full list of our course objectives, please contact us at cvcme@mayo.edu.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This course is intended for cardiologists, cardiovascular fellows, and general internists who want both a live forum and online platform to continue learning year-round.
