Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. selects a winner for our Five Star Program at the end of every event we organize. The criteria for this selection reflects who we believe came to the event prepared to exhibit, engaged with attendees in a friendly and interested manner and showed remarkable salesmanship skills in working to meet researchers and market life science products. Five Star Winners are great communicators, act professionally and conduct demonstrations. Their exhibits are also visually stimulating and stand out from the competition. These sales reps draw large crowds to their booths and promote their company’s message in an engaging way.

Researchers at Rockefeller University, led by Dr. Gaby Maimon, recently received NIH funding for their studies of fruit flies’ neuronal activity in decision-making, which they believe has the potential to impact pharmaceuticals for human mental illness. According to the Rockefeller University website, Dr. Maimon’s research team aims to “link the electrical activity of neurons and the biochemical action of molecules to their computational roles in animal behavior. The lab has a particular interest in understanding how central brain structures, distant from the sensory and motor periphery, govern behavioral choice.” The latest research grant money has been given to an ongoing project titled “Linking Genes to Higher Brain Function by Way of Cellular Electrophysiology.” The project received $2.5 million from the NIH. The NIH RePORTER details the goals of the project in an abstract posted online:

Researchers at Rockefeller University received a $1.9 million NIH grant this year for the project “Identification of Cell Type-Specific Actions of Antipsychotic Drugs.” The study is being led by Paul Greengard, PhD. According to the Rockefeller University webpage, Greengard’s research aims are to understand the molecular basis of communication between neurons in the brain in mammals, clarify the molecular defects responsible for a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders and determine the molecular mechanisms by which neuro- and psychoactive drugs produce their pharmacological actions.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc.’s three back-to-back New York life science marketing events are quickly approaching starting October 1st, 2013, and they are the perfect opportunities for lab suppliers to market their university lab equipment and life science solutions. Our New York life science marketing events attracted 850 attendees last year. Of the attendees, 216 were purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 83 were lab managers. The visitors represented 63 different research buildings and 153 departments across the three campuses. How many days of canvassing campuses would it take to visit over 150 research departments? These three life science marketing events introduce lab suppliers to hundreds of leads over the space of a few hours in just three days.

Rockefeller University has a wealth of research funding available, making New York one of the best funded markets for laboratory equipment sales. According to recent NIH and NSF research funding statistics, the university was awarded at least $70.9 million in 2012. The NIH in particular awarded Rockefeller University $70.1 million in 2012. The money was distributed out to a number of research projects across a range of departments at the university. For the convenience of our readers, we have compiled a list broken down by the number of projects awarded research funding in some of the science research disciplines and the total amount of funding for those projects. For the full list of departments, number of awards and funding, please visit the NIH website.
