Michigan State University has received more than $3.6 million to study diseases spread in animals. Three grants worth $2.7 million came from the United States Department of Agriculture, which will help farmers protect livestock and increase food security and production in the nation. An additional $907,000 came from National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development grant, which is one of NSF’s most prestigious awards for pre-tenured faculty. The grant from NSF will help researchers at Michigan State university study West Nile virus and Bird flu.

The Michigan Life Science Corridor is a life science research consortium based at four Michigan universities: Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids, and Wayne State University. It was established in 1999 with a $1 billion state tobacco lawsuit settlement and provided a network of advanced technology laboratories for academic researchers. The state of Michigan plans to award $50 million annually for the next 20 years to the consortium to continue to accelerate life science research and cutting edge discoveries.

TB, which is one of the world’s deadliest diseases, can remain dormant for years without being detected. Robert Abramovitch, MSU Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, has genetically engineered a protein that glows green when tuberculosis enters its latent stage. Abramovitch's work is a triumph that promises to find a faster-acting cure for TB.
