Irvine Scientists Find Connection Between Alzheimer's and Inflammatory Cells

Posted by Laura Braden on Tue, Mar 22, 2016

Neuroscience is an ever-expanding life science field. There is so much still unknown about the brain and diseases that affect it, and scientists are constantly performing research and publishing new findings. Diseases such as Alzheimer's, which affects memory and causes behavioral problems, are continually being investigated with the ultimate goal of finding a cure and creating new treatment methods. Recently, a team of researchers found a connection between the memory loss associated with Alzheimer's Disease and certain inflammatory cells in the brain.

UCI Researchers Study “Seeds” of Huntington’s Disease

Posted by Robert Larkin on Mon, Aug 31, 2015

Scientists at UC Irvine have created a new method to quickly and accurately track the progression of Huntington’s disease. Irvine researchers studied Huntington’s proteins present in spinal fluid to determine that they held a “seeding” property, which is essential to the disease’s progression.

UCI Researcher Granted $2.3 Million from NIH to Rejuvenate Brains

Posted by Robert Larkin on Wed, Jun 03, 2015

Brain plasticity, or neuroplasticity, refers to the ability of the brain to react to the variety of changes that occur in the brain’s synapses or neural pathways over time. More specifically, plasticity involves changes that occur in the brain as a result of learning and experience, which is derived from emotions, behavior, thinking, and environment.  As a person reaches adulthood, the brain loses plasticity and becomes more rigid in its layout and function. Loss of plasticity also commonly occurs in those affected with traumatic brain injuries or disease.

Irvine Scientists Use Salmon to Cure Paralysis

Posted by Sam Asher on Thu, Sep 04, 2014

Roughly 2 percent of Americans have some form of paralysis resulting from spinal cord injury, according to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation. It is impossible to restore function and movement lost in this sort of paralysis…or at least, it has been up until now. A bioresearch team at the University of California, Irvine has discovered the perfect concoction to cure such paralysis using, of all things, a protein transplant from salmon.
