UC Davis Bioresearchers Mending Bones with Stem Cells

Posted by Robert Larkin on Tue, Jan 27, 2015

Make no bones about it; scientists at University of California, Davis are finally fleshing out the intricacies of skeletal stem cells. According to a university press release, UC Davis surgeons have launched a “proof-of-concept” clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of a device that can rapidly concentrate and extract young cells from fluid used during orthopaedic surgery. The new approach may prove essential to delivering stem cell therapy to stubborn, non-healing bone fractures.

UCLA BioResearchers Develop Roadmap for Stem Cell Reprogramming

Posted by Robert Larkin on Fri, Jan 16, 2015

Much like planning a road trip, reprogramming human stem cells relies on developing a list of sequential actions, or a “roadmap” of sorts, after which it is little more complicated than following the prescribed directions. Without an accurate roadmap for the human stem cells, however, researchers at University of California, Los Angeles had to develop their own.

UCSD Researchers Find Unexpected Fighter Against Skin Infections

Posted by Robert Larkin on Thu, Jan 15, 2015

babyfingersEveryone who has ever sliced their finger instead of a vegetable or received a nasty paper cut knows that a skin infection can tend to make things a whole lot worse. Until recently, the absence of an infection was thought to rely solely on the activity of white blood cells (and the availability of anti-bacterial ointment). However, the skin could be getting a little healing help from fat cells, according to scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Researchers at UCSD, led by Richard Gallo, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chief of dermatology, say that fat cells below the skin help protect us from bacteria by producing antimicrobial peptides that help fend off invading bacteria and other pathogens.

UCLA Bioresearch Indicates Memories May be Restored

Posted by Robert Larkin on Tue, Dec 30, 2014

What happens when we forget something as precious as a personal memory? Is that memory just tucked away in some deep dark corner of our brain, along with all those passwords and telephone numbers…or is it completely erased from existence, never to cross our minds again? New bioresearch from UCLA may help to shed some light on that foggy brain and offer clues into the nature of long-term memory loss.
