Oregon Health and Science University received funding from the NIH to further Cardiac Arrest Studies

According to OHSU News, “Oregon Health & Science University is participating in a multi-center clinical trial to determine whether two drugs commonly used to stabilize the heart during cardiac arrest actually improve survival rates and neurological function among cardiac arrest victims.”

For science supply and service companies trying to break in to the laboratory supply marketplace, it pays to put your name in front of your research target audience.

Researchers have a lot at stake with every lab supply and equipment purchase they make. Each experiment in an ongoing study typically has multiple steps, with often complex methods. The success of each individual step is based on the steps that came before it.  Sometimes each process takes days, weeks, or months. And, scientific research being what it is, in the end the entire process need to be reproducible.

The University of Alabama is making a strong name for itself among the life-science community. UAB receives more than $400 million annually in research grants, and ranks in the top 25 in NIH funding, flanking closely to UCSD and UCLA. Any science supply company can purchase a booth or tabletop display at a national or boutique science related trade show, send a sales rep and some literature, and if the product is good, they will likely get leads. The best leads-- the most eager, most relevant and most urgent leads-- usually convert to sales.  The best sales reps get more leads, follow up on them faster, and communicate the company's value proposition better, converting more of them to sales than their less competent counterparts.

Summer travel is usually busy, with airports crowded with a mix of business and professional travelers, but every so often- the stars and cloud patterns align in such a way that hundreds of travelers are stranded overnight in a place that wasn't initially part of their plans. Take tonight's  mix of events that stranded over 1,000 passengers at Boston's Logan Airport.  (A Mass Port Employee mentioned that of the 1000+ overnight guests, over 500 were stranded from a plane from Poland.) Usually business travelers resign to the fact that they will spend the night in a hotel nearby. Alas, tonight every hotel room under $300 in the major Boston Metropolitan area was booked. So business and vacation travelers devised creative solutions to the problem of "sleep" and entertainment.  To put in a plug for the airlines, and Mass Port Authority - it was a great place for our Science Market Update blogger to spend the night- clean, well lit, and customer service oriented and sympathetic staff. We never did get cots though. So we were wondering what kind of showing our life science market had at this event. Feel free to comment below if you were there.

As a result of these tough times, lab equipment and lab supply companies are facing a highly competitive and limited pool of deep research pockets. Therefore, it makes sense to work as efficiently and competitively as possible with the sales resources available. This means that it's important to look critically at every process to determine where your efforts are most effective.
