Workshop on the Cryopreservation of Mouse Germplasm
Workshop - Bar Harbor, ME, US
The cryopreservation course is offered to teach methods in cryopreservation for research strains of mice. Several methods of cryopreservation are now available and because no single method is adequate for all strains of mice being developed, several methods are taught. The course is designed primarily as a "hands-on" laboratory program in which participants will learn techniques for the cryopreservation of cleavage-stage embryos, spermatozoa and ovaries .
In addition, general principles of cryobiology, development of inventory databases for individual programs and adaptation of long-term storage systems and cryogenic equipment for different situations will be discussed. Please note: the new sperm cryopreservation procedure recently developed by The Jackson Laboratory will be taught in this workshop.
Applicants who do not have the pre-requisite embryo handling skills will be required to enroll in the Embryo Transfer Workshop immediately prior to this course.
In order to protect the health of the large mouse colonies at the Laboratory, certain regulations are in effect regarding prior contact with laboratory animals or pet rodents. Specifically, investigators cannot enter certain areas of the Laboratory if they have had any contact (handling or presence in an animal room) with laboratory animals, especially rodents, within the previous five days. Some workshop activities are held in these restricted areas. It is important that course participants not have any contact with laboratory animals after 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 24th.
