This month the Mayo Clinic has announced the official beginning of a $3 billion philanthropic fundraising campaign to accelerate the pace of research, to solve unmet needs of patients, and to improve the quality of health care. Mayo clinic has so far raised more than half the money, or $1.7 billion, since the quiet phase of the campaign began in 2010. The campaign will continue until December 31, 2017.
The lack of consistent funding sources is the biggest barrier to accelerating medical breakthroughs that can benefit patients. Traditional funding sources, such as federal grants, really cannot cover the cost of cutting edge research and the following clinical processes.
Approximately 85% of the campaign's philanthropic grants come from patients. A successful campaign will help patients with new treatments and cures, finding answers for devastating diseases, and supporting unparalleled patient care. The benefactors' generosity and legacy will matter for generations to come.
