UC Irvine Science Plaza. The University of California, Irvine is a growing life science research institution that is continually growing its research facilities and capabilities. A recent gift of $200 million dollars is the latest funding helping UCI establish itself as a leading life science research institution. This new $200 million was given to UCI by Susan and Henry Samueli and is the largest gift in the university's history. It will be used to establish the new Susan and Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences and will allow researchers from all campus departments the opportunity to focus on integrative health - the health of the whole person. The Samueli's have previously donated to UCI and have established the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, which will now be renamed the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute.

Director of the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Shaista Malik explained that: "As a preventative cardiologist and researcher, I cannot stress enough the critical need for society to adopt a truly integrative approach to health, whether we are talking about community health, nutrition, prevention or appropriate medications. It must start with those who provide care and guidance. Through this exciting new college, we will demonstrate to everyone involved in the health system - from patients to providers to policymakers - the value of an integrative approach."

Once the new college is established, it will be home to different research institutes, centers, and departments including:

  • School of Medicine
  • School of Pharmacy
  • School of Population Health
  • School of Nursing

These new funds will be used to construct the facility to house the new college and create laboratories with the best technologies and products available. In addition to the construction, programs to provide integrative health training to medical students will be available, along with educational, research, and clinical training programs and opportunities provided through the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute.

Lab suppliers meet with active life scientists at a past UC Irvine event.   Market lab supplies to Irvine area researchers.

The University of California, Irvine is a leading institution in terms of the amount of funding it receives each year from both private and public donors, and the research it produces. In the 2016 fiscal year, the university received over $111.8 million in funding from the NIH. This funding greatly benefits multiple research projects and new buildings around the campus.

Departments at the university receiving substantial amounts of this funding include:

  1. Internal Medicine/Medicine - $13.2 million
  2. Anatomy/Cell Biology - $10 million
  3. Other Basic Sciences - $9.9 million
  4. Neurology - $8.8 million
  5. Biochemistry - $8.4 million

With all this funding, researchers at UCI have the means to purchase new lab supplies that will further their research projects. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. produces an annual BioResearch Product FaireTM event in Irvine that is the premiere opportunity to market lab supplies to more than 100 active life science researchers.

The 17th Annual BioResearch Product FaireTM event at UC Irvine will be held on October 24th, 2017 where researchers from 20 different research buildings and 28 different on-campus departments.
