UGA and Emory Collaborations Increase Life Science Research Potential

Written by Laura Braden | Tue, Feb 16, 2016

Life scientists at different institutions around the country work on similar projects, trying to find answers to pressing science questions. Often times, researchers collaborate with colleagues from different institutions to help further their work, by getting support from others in their field. In early 2015, the University of Georgia, Athens and Emory University in Atlanta received $45 million in funding for collaborative life science research projects. Now, these 2 leading research institutions are continuing to work together through sharing their core facilities.

Researchers from Emory University will now be able to use 16 core facilities at UGA, including facilities for:

  • Imaging
  • Electron microscopy
  • Isotopes
  • Flow cytometry
  • Mass spectrometry

UGA researchers will have access to 14 core facilities at Emory, including facilities for:

  • Genomics
  • Proteomics
  • Transgenic mouse and animal models
  • Cancer tissue
  • Electron microscopy

Michael Zwick, PhD from the Emory Unviersity  School of Medicine and the Woodruff Health Sciences Center explained that "we are very pleased to offer researchers at both Emory and UGA greater access to each others' core facilities. At Emory, we have been working hard to better organize and consolidate our shared service centers, and this is an excellent time to pursue greater collaboration with our partner institutions in Georgia for the benefit of our faculty and our research mission. We hope to expand this kind of facilities collaboration with our other partners."

The University of Georgia and Emory University are two of the top research institutions in the southern United States, receveing millions of dollars in annual life science funding. In the 2015 fiscal year, Emory University received $287.9 million from the NIH and UGA received more than $45.8 million.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. produces 2 annual BioResearch Product Faire Events in Georgia that provide laboratory suppliers with the opportunity to meet face-to-face with hundreds of active life science researchers in just a few hours.

Lab supplier who attend these Georgia events are able to:

  • Demonstrate products to both purchasing agents and end-users.

  • Answer questions, pass out samples, and discuss research projects to explain why your supplies are needed.

  • Schedule follow-up appointments with top lead prospects to further their understanding of the benefits of using your products and services.

  • Gain brand exposure in the academic marketplace while nurturing new and existing leads.

  • Network with scientists from all life science fields, and with reps from a wide variety of laboratory supply companies.

For a chance to market lab supplies to researchers from Emory University at the 17th Annual BioResearch Product Faire Event in Atlanta on March 31, 2016, and at UGA at the 17th Annual BioResearch Product FaireEvent in Athens on April 1, 2016, visit the links below:
