2013 Innovations Symposium Stress Responses, Inflammation and Disease
Symposium - Chicago, IL, United States
Although the etiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) has not been completely defined, significant progress has been made recently in understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases. It is now apparent that IBD develops, at least in part, as a result of a failure to maintain normal host-microbial interactions and mucosal immune homeostasis in a genetically susceptible individual. It is also increasingly clear that many environmental factors can contribute to the development and pathogenesis of IBD, including nutrition, stress, life style and the composition of intestinal microbiota.
Recently, this deeper understanding of the genetic and immunologic factors of IBD has uncovered defects in shared fundamental biological pathways that are associated with cell stress responses that may contribute to IBD. Cells of the intestine are exposed to a broad array of environmental cues that trigger cell stress responses. These pathways are integral to cellular homeostasis and influence inflammatory, metabolic, and survival outcomes that in turn impact intestinal homeostasis. Therefore, understanding the regulation and integration of cell stress response pathways is central to understanding the pathophysiology and potential cures for IBD.
That’s why we’re bringing together the finest minds from a variety of disciplines in this one-day symposium to present their cutting-edge research on the molecular and cellular aspects of inflammatory and stress response pathways presented in the context of IBD.
Topics include:
Intestinal epithelial cell development and immunity
Autophagy in infection & colitis
Heat shock protein responses
Hypoxic cell stress
Endoplasmic reticulum stress
