Conference - Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The significance of biodiversity is transcendent, from its economic importance to the local communities that are dependent on it to its enrichment of their and visitors’ lives through its beauty, as well the enrichment of the human spirit. Human culture is also fundamentally shaped by biodiversity. Every day, humanity’s environmental legacy is laid bare in the notes of researchers, as the consequences of routine human activities are found increasingly to result in unprecedented devastation of the Earth’s biodiversity.
Despite its importance, the same researchers who witness widespread biodiversity loss also find that knowledge of biodiversity, particularly in the remotest but often ecologically richest parts of the world, is lamentably poor compared with other aspects of biology. Thus, every researcher of biodiversity is a vital contributor to its understanding and conservation. Education is another deficient component of conservation, with disunity between research and public engagement negating the best efforts of scientists. With humankind standing on its most dangerous precipice as a species, the imperative to act has never been stronger.
Providing avenues of communication between scientists, consequently, is the best means of strengthening biodiversity knowledge and promoting the ideal of environmental sustainability. Bringing together the scientific community enables an exchange of experience and knowledge, and using the lessons learnt here to inform public action helps to encourage better, more sustainable practices.
The biennial ICBS has proudly facilitated an international dialogue on biodiversity since 2009. In the fourth conference, we continue this tradition of uniting the spirit of science with the endeavors of scientists
