In the research science world, green is a gradient, it is a starting place from which to move in a more sustainable direction. It’s also a gradient that researchers are willing to pay more for. Over 95% of the researchers we surveyed at an on campus life science marketing event said they would be willing to pay more for green chemistry products.
Are Our Products Green-enough?
Your questions should be, how are some of your products greener than others that are currently produced and sold? Consider the following questions:
- What does your company do that is a more sustainable in practice? Better packaging? More rapidly biodegradable?
- What if your entire operation uses 20% less energy this year because you have installed solar- or now use more energy efficient light bulbs?
- Can you boast that you waste less with your shipping processes, packing processes, production processes? Do you use fewer or less harsh chemicals in production?
- What else are you doing that is sustainable and positive and can set you apart from your competition?
Do keep in mind that your tech savvy and inquisitive audience is already looking for those companies who are making real progress in this area. Responsible, progressive companies can leverage these qualities to boost their product sales to a receptive laboratory research audience. This market does understand that the costs can be higher for these products and has indicated that they are willing to pay those costs.
If you are in sales or marketing, now is the time to start the dialog with your facilities, manufacturing, packaging and shipping departments to see which sustainable improvements have been made already, or what your company can do in the future

In addition - many of the universities that we host shows at are specifically and actively asking for greener products, and green product vendors. One of the universities most proactively seeking greener products for life science research is Rockefeller University in New York City.
