The Medical College of Wisconsin is a major national research center, in fact, the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin. In FY 2010-11, faculty received more than $175 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which more than $161 million was for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In the federal government’s FY 2011, the Medical College received approximately $92.9 million in NIH funding and ranked 43rd among the nation’s 136 medical schools for NIH research funding. In FY 2011, the Medical College was one of only 20 of the top 50 medical schools (in terms of NIH funding) to receive an increase in base NIH funding.

The Medical College’s research enterprise is focused on strategic, prioritized areas of research involving interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and physicians with the goal of rapidly translating discoveries into advances for patient care. Medical College faculty conducted more than 2,200 research studies, including clinical trials, in FY 2010-11
