Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Receives Four Year, $231K Grant To Study Pediatric Brain Cancer

Written by Emily Norwood | Mon, Aug 13, 2018

Dr. Jay F. Sarthy of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has been awarded a $231,000 grant over the next four years from The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation as one of five scientists receiving the Damon Runyon-Sohn Pediatric Cancer Fellowship Award. The award will be used to study pediatric brain cancer with the ultimate goal being the development of new drugs to restore the ability of cells to package DNA correctly eliminating cancer. Under the mentorship of Dr. Steven Henikoff, a geneticist, and  Dr. Jim Olson, a neuro-oncologist, Sarthy will try to develop new affordable methods of studying epigenetics and DNA packaging in pediatric cancer.

“I am fortunate to have two great mentors in Steve Henikoff and Jim Olson and look forward to conducting research on pediatric cancers using the cutting-edge methods and tools developed in each of their labs," said Sarthy in a recent press release. The research will focus on glioma and neuroblastoma in hopes of developing methods that would help explain what causes pediatric malignancies. The researchers hope this would lead to better monitoring of treatment responses in patients.

The Damon Runyon-Sohn award has been awarded to over 25 pediatric cancer researchers since 2012 providing more than $3 million in funding to innovative cancer research. “We place our bets on funding bold and innovative ideas from emerging scientists, as they hold the promise of advancing treatment and cures for children with cancer”, stated Evan Sohn of The Sohn Conference Foundation when explaining the competitive process of deciding on fellows to receive the prestigious award and funding.
