Construction has begun for the third phase of UW Medicine’s research hub in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood. This new building project is part of a major expansion of UW Medicine's research facilities by the development company Vulcan Real Estate.
Phases one and two of the project have already been completed and compromise nearly 400,000 square feet out of the planned total of 800,000 square feet for the entire project. These already completed research facilities currently house approximately 1,000 researchers and employees engaged in a variety of research fields including microbiology, biomarkers, biologic imaging, heart regeneration, neurobiology, genetics and proteomics.

The current third phase under construction will be made up of three buildings that will total over 542,000 square feet. This is a major expansion of UW Medicine's lab space. The first building alone will house over 400 researchers. Dr. Paul Ramsey, CEO of UW Medicine and dean of the UW School of Medicine commented on the new building saying that it will "allow us to bring together additional researchers from critically important areas and build upon the collaborative work of these scientific leaders in state-of-the-art facilities.”
The new lab research facilities will provide researchers with new opportunities for vital research into many areas of disease and human health. The new building will provide lab facilities for research in the areas of immunology, Rheumatology, Kidney Research, and Vision Sciences. The new facility will also house the Center for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases. This substantial building project represents a $360 million investment by the UW School of Medicine. UW estimates that phase three of this project alone will bring in more than $100 million in new research grants and provide 1,400 new UW jobs.
