The laboratory equipment supplier Thermo Fisher Scientific has donated their first piece of equipment to the nonprofit Seeding Labs. This admirable nonprofit provides labs in developing countries with much needed lab supplies and professional training.
Nina Dudnik, Seeding Labs Founder and CEO, described her organizations mission saying, “We knew that the unused testing equipment and laboratory supplies could advance research for scientists in other parts of the world, who had skills but no access to the resources they needed.” A partnership with laboratory equipment supply giant Thermo Fisher could greatly advance Seeding Lab's cause. This partnership is part of Thermo Fisher's “Upgrade with Reward$” program, which allows customers to trade in old equipment to be donated to seeding labs and given to a science lab without sufficient funds or access to obtain equipment for itself.
The first piece of equipment that Seeding Labs received because of this partnership was a Thermo Scientific NanoDrop 1000 spectrophotometer, a device that allows scientists to examine the purity of biochemical samples. It is an absolutely essential piece of equipment in any biology lab.
In addition to the donation program, Thermo Fisher also plans to participate in the Seeding Labs Fellows Program which allows scientists from around the world to collaborate with U.S. scientists to promote mutual scientific advancement.

Seeding Labs is currently aiding numerous institutions in 17 different countries with over $1 million in donations.
In our blog Biomedical Equipment & Supplies Get New Life as 3rd World Surplus we discussed three organizations which send second-hand equipment and unopened supply stock to struggling hospitals in the third world countries rather than it going to waste.
