Advanced Imaging Techniques

Course - Heidelberg, Germany

With the help of advanced microscopy techniques, this six days practical course is on how to derive qualitative and quantitative insights on molecular mechanisms in cells and developing organisms. Invited guest researchers together with experts from the EMBL and microscopy professionals will allow an intense information flow and a balance of lectures and intense practical workshops. The focus of the course will be on the use of fluorescence microscopy to obtain quantitative information about protein dynamics in living samples.

Topics:
The topics covered will include all aspects of probe design and fluorescence microscopy imaging and analysis such as: time-lapse microscopy, confocal microscopy, super resolution microscopy and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRF).

Special emphasis will be however on quantitative methods such as: fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), fluorescence correlation microscopy (FCS) and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). The course will also include state-of-the-art data analysis and image processing techniques.
