17th ADNAT Symposium:Symposium on Genomics in Personalised Medicine and Public Health

Conference - Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India

As early as 1892, Sir William Osler made an observation that "If it were not for the great variability among individuals, medicine might as well be a science and not an art." Today the science behind this art is being dissected out by understanding the factors that contribute to these variabilities. Even WHO has redefined the definition of health. It states, Health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. This definition clearly outlines that public health issues need to be addressed from a systems viewpoint but in a personalized manner. The traditional practices that we are aware of in health such as Ayurveda, Yin and Yang, Sasang etc which originated in various parts of the Asian subcontinent, do discuss about using such an approach. But these approaches could not gain confidence of the masses due to poor understanding of the processes and approaches used in such practices. Today with the understanding of the human genome there is a renewed interest in understanding the systems viewpoint by using a personalized approach to diagnosis and therapy. This has also generated renewed interest in understanding the traditional approaches to medical practices. Therefore, the objective of the present meeting would be to identify tools, methods and models used to understand health from systems viewpoint. Modern and traditional approaches to systems biology in understanding a disease and interventional strategies for personalized treatment will be the key theme of the symposium.
