EMBO Conference: 'Ubiquitin and Ubiquitin-Like Proteins: from Structure to Function'

Conference - Lucca, Italy

Post-translational modification of proteins by covalent attachment of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifiers impacts on most areas of biology. Drugs, such as Velcade, that target ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis are used to treat cancer and other drugs are under development. In this EMBO Conference we will cover new findings that explore the roles of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like proteins in diverse biological systems and elucidate components and general mechanisms underlying these modifications.

This ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifier field comprises basic biochemistry, structural biology, cell biology, translational approaches in diverse disease areas, and modern systems biology. Bringing together researchers from these areas to encourage an open exchange of ideas and experimental strategies is the main goal of this EMBO Conference.

Topics to be covered at the conference include:

ubiquitin-mediated degradation,

E3 ligase specificity,

chain building and processing,

mechanism of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifier conjugation,

ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifiers in signalling pathways,

the DNA damage response,

cell cycle regulation,

system wide analysis of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like modifier.
