The Enigmatic Chloride Ion: Transport, Regulation, and Roles in Physiology

Organized by Nael McCarty, T-C Hwang, and Merritt Maduke, The Enigmatic Chloride Ion promises to be a showstopper. Chloride is the most abundant physiological anion, but the broad importance of Cl channels and transporters in biology has only recently become appreciated. This meeting will highlight our new level of understanding of how Cl channels/transporters operate and how Cl ions impact cell function.
The importance of Cl ion homeostasis is highlighted by the diverse human diseases that are caused by Cl channel/transporter defects. These diseases include cystic fibrosis, myotonias, epilepsy, startle disease, osteopetrosis, and Dent's Disease.
Cl channel/transporter research provides a unique interface for ion transport physiologists, cell biologists, human geneticists, neuroscientists, and clinician-scientists to meet. We anticipate that The Enigmatic Chloride Ion will provide just such a forum
