Science Researcher Update: Spotlight on Meetings, Conferences, and Events

Lysophospholipids and Related Mediators - From Bench to Clinic

Posted on Jun 16, 2015 6:32:38 AM

Conference - Banff, Canada

This FASEB Science Research Conference focuses mainly on new developments in understanding the biology of lysophospholipids, especially lysophosphosphatidate (LPA) and sphingosine 1-phosphate. Lysophospholipids activate families of G protein-coupled receptors and they also have intracellular actions. Dysfunctions of lysophospholipid signaling cause defects in embryological development, wound repair, inflammation, fibrosis, malfunction in the vascular and immune systems, and tumor progression, metastasis and chemo-resistance. The conference will discuss recent scientific advances in understanding how lysophospholipids control normal physiological signaling. These sessions will be followed by discussions on how this signaling becomes dysfunctional in a variety of clinical conditions. There will also be presentations on the new medical treatments that have been initiated to translate this knowledge into clinical practice. There will be significant representation from the pharmaceutical industry in order to facilitate networking between industry and academia. Several new therapeutic developments in this area will be highlighted during the meeting. The overall purpose of the conference is to disseminate new knowledge concerning lysophospholipid and related lipid biology in health and disease with a focus on translational developments into the clinic. The topic areas have been chosen to maximize discussion of provocative and important developments. We have left up to 32 speaking slots open and these will be selected from novel advances during 2014-2015 and from the abstracts that have been submitted. Two different poster sessions will be held during the conference and these will each be open for two days. Time will also be allocated to two "meet the expert sessions" where invited speakers will dedicate time to interacting with trainees and give advice concerning the science and possible prospects for postdoctoral training or other employment. The conference will allow ample time for principal investigators and trainees to interact and talk with the invited speakers, who are expected to attend each day of the meeting. This FASEB conference has taken place every two years since 1999. It has become a very popular conference and it consistently attracts leading experts from within the field.
