The University of California, San Diego is a world-class life science research institution. The University has many research centers and programs that help enhance the wide range of research projects that UCSD scientists perform. Research centers at UCSD include:

  • UC San Diego Medical Center
  • UC San Diego Stroke Center
  • UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center
  • Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (CTRI)

The University of California, San Diego recently opened its newest research center that will help ensure that it continues to be a leading research institution. The new center that opened in partnership with the U.S. Hereditary Angioedema Association (HAEA) is called the HAEA Angioedema Center at UC San Diego Health Systems and is the first center in the U.S. dedicated entirely to the study of angioedema. Angioedema is a swelling that occurs anywhere in the body and can lead to serious health problems. The swelling that occurs under the skin is similar to hives, but unlike hives, the cause of angioedema is often unknown. The condition is often misdiagnosed as an allergy or bowel disorder, which leads to the wrong treatment and can ultimately cause further problems. Swelling in the arms or feet can make it difficult to complete daily tasks, while swelling in the throat can cause the inability to breathe.

Hereditary angioedema is very rare, and only affects about 1 in 50,000 people. One form of hereditary angioedema is known to be caused by the lack of a certain blood protein, but other forms are much more poorly understood. The new Angioedema Center at UCSD will focus on researching different types of angioedema, including hereditary angioedema, to help make sure the condition is accurately diagnosed, as well as to gain a better understanding of the condition and find new treatments.

Bruce Zuraw, MD, a UCSD professor of medicine and the director of the new center, explained that "the opening of this Center is an incredible step toward building a national center of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of angioedema. With our research and clinical expertise and partnership with the U.S. Hereditary Angioedema Association, we can improve patients’ lives, save lives and ultimately find a cure.”

The University of California, San Diego is a large, highly funded life science research marketplace with numerous research projects underway in the schools many research centers and departments. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. puts on a semiannual Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ Event at UCSD twice a year. This event gives scientific supply companies the chance to market their lab products and technologies directly to researchers at UCSD. The next event in San Diego will be the 39th Semiannual Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ Event on February 12, 2015 where 500 researchers are expected to attend.
