The Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health and Science University, a world-leader in cancer research, recently accomplished raising $1 billion in funding to help support the groundbreaking life science research being conducted at the center.
Along with supporting research, this funding is also supporting the construction of new research centers and buildings on the OHSU campus. Earlier this month, work began on constructing the newest building on campus, a $160 million, 320,000 square foot research building that is expected to be completed in 2018 and house 600 life scientists.
Groundbreaking for the new Knight Cancer Institute research building took place on June 16, 2016 at the site of the building's future home, next to the Collaborative Life Science Building. Once the building is built and operational, cancer research ranging from early detection to immuno-oncology will take place by a vast variety of scientists, who will work individually as well as collaboratively.
“To ensure a comprehensive approach, we require experts with knowledge in electronics, optics, biology and cancer. It’s crucial that we have a multidisciplinary team working closely together,” explained OHSU scientist, Sadik Esener, Ph.D. “This building will be ideal for carrying out team science.”

The new research building will be well equipped with labs and conference space to allow the scientists to conduct their research. The building will include:
Brian Druker, M.D., director of the Knight Cancer Institute explained that: “We are grateful for the state’s investment in our mission to end cancer as we know it, and we look forward to celebrating the scientific achievements that will take place within these walls."
