The University of California, Irvine research department is growing after spending over $340 million last year in research and development. The recent spending will allow the university to expand and continue its research in the sciences.

Recent research building construction projects:
The new $443,000 Biosafety Level 3 Training laboratory opened in May. This is the first of its kind in the country and was specifically built for educational purposes at UC Irvine.
A five-year, $8 million grant was awarded jointly to stem cell researchers at UCLA and UCI to establish the CIRM Alpha Stem Cell Clinic.
The California Wildlife Conservation Board awarded UCI with $2.833M for new construction at the Steele/Burnand Anza-Borrego Desert Research Center. Construction is in progress.
