Thanks to the stimulus package, the University of Oregon in Eugene was awarded a record $135.6 million in new competitively awarded external funding in 2010.
Much of this funding came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which awarded UO $23.2 million from 38 stimulus awards.
The record breaking funding total was made up of 610 grants and other awards and represented an 18 percent increase from the funding total for fiscal year 2008-2009.
A substantial portion of this funding increase (more than $10 million) came from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
According to UO’s vice president for graduate studies and research Richard Linton, the new funding from NIH and NSF will be used to purchase new pieces of research equipment and improve existing laboratories and research facilities.
The NIH funding includes $9.1 million specifically to update, improve, and expand UO's core research facilities and thus allow for more science and health research and innovation in the future.
