MIF in Health and Disease

Symposium - Mumbai, India

The NCE Research Division of Piramal Life Sciences (a vertical of Piramal Enterprises Limited) is organizing a 2- day international symposium on "MIF in Health and Disease". This symposium will be held on November 1-2, 2012 in Mumbai (India).

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), one of the first soluble immunomodulator discovered, is a pleiotropic cytokine with wide-ranging cellular and biological activities. A growing body of evidence from in vitro, in vivo and most importantly, clinically-relevant studies implicates MIF: in the pathogenesis of oncologic disorders, diabetes/metabolic syndrome, a variety of inflammatory and auto-immune diseases, and also an array of infectious diseases. Given this, MIF is an active area of academic and more importantly, industrial research. Several investigators have adopted a synergistic combination of basic and translational research to further unravel the "disease-specific" contributory role of MIF, in order to seek and develop potent and selective drug-like MIF inhibitors as therapeutic agents. This symposium brings together pioneers in the field of MIF including, the discoverer of MIF (Prof. John David, MD). These pioneers will speak about their scientific quest towards increasing the fundamental understanding of MIF and controlling its biological activity in various pathologies.
