- NIH 2011 Funding: (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $34,208,893
- The University of Georgia is planning a $113 million veterinary medicine learning center.
- The UGA Biofuels, Biopower and Biomaterials Initiative received more than $2.5 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Energy for research in biomass genomics and related biofuel studies.
- UGA was the lead university in the grant proposal and will receive about $20 million over a five-year period.
- The University of Georgia built a nano specialist room at a cost of $2.3 million, which will attract further million dollar grants.

- NIH 2011 Ranking: 18th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $273,383,861
- Researchers at Emory University received $539.7 million from external funding agencies in fiscal year 2011, an increase from $535.1 million in fiscal year 2010.
- Research funding in Emory’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) was $511.5 million, more than 94 percent of the university total. The WHSC includes schools of medicine, public health, nursing, Yerkes National Primate Research Center, Winship Cancer Institute and Emory Healthcare.
- Over the past five years, Emory’s research funding has increased by more than 52 percent.
- Construction of a new $90 million, 200,00 gross square feet Health Sciences Research Building on the Emory University campus began in June 2011. The facility is expected to be completed in April 2013. Much of the new building will be devoted to pediatric research.
- The Emory Vaccine Center at Yerkes National Primate Research Center received a five year, $15.5 million grant.
- Emory received $8 million in research funding from the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.
- Emory University receives $5 million for innovative research projects to address Alzheimer’s disease.
- The Emory/Georgia Tech Regenerative Engineering and Medicine Center recently awarded 11 seed grants, totaling $630,000, for promising new research in regenerative medicine
