$18 Million to Renowned Columbia University Cancer Center, HICCC

The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at Columbia University Medical Center and New York Presbyterian Hospital is a growing, highly funded research institution that focuses on researching all aspects of cancers. Since it's establishment in 1972, the HICCC has continuously performed world-renowned research and clinical trials.

With the recent award of a five year, $18 million grant from the National Cancer Institute, the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) at the Columbia University Medical Center renewed it's status as one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in New York City, one of only three in New York State, and one of only 41 in the United States.

Current areas of study at the HICCC include: 

• Cancer Regulatory Networks Program that studies and maps genes that drive aggressive forms of cancer. 
• Breast Cancer Program which studies different risks associated with different treatments for Breast Cancer. 
• Neuro-Oncology Research for studying the systems biology, genetics, cell biology and therapy of brain tumors. 
• Leukemia Research focused on finding new drug targets. 
• Cancer Epidemiology that studies how environmental, lifestyle and genetic factors lead to increased incidences of cancer. 

Lee Goldman, MD, MPH, a Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons explained that “both clinical and research programs at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center have grown significantly in the past several years under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Emerson, and this grant recognizes our potential to change the way cancer is diagnosed, treated, and prevented. This latest renewal will ensure continuity of our current research, patient care, and educational programs as we continue to add leading cancer researchers and clinicians to our extremely talented and dedicated team.”

• HICCC researchers currently have more than $120 million in active NIH and NCI research grants. 
• The HICCC has over 250 members that come from 6 Columbia University schools.
• There are 12 core facilities, and 8 research programs at the HICCC
• Clinicians diagnose and treat more than 3,500 new cases of cancer each year.
• In the most recent NCI funding cycle, HICCC researchers published more than 3,000 research publications. 
• There are 200 active clinical trials for HICCC patients.
