Richard and Susan Rogal recently committed $150,000,000 to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is the largest gift ever been made to Michigan Medicine. The money will be used to support promising cancer research and help train the next generation of researchers.

The gift will achieve this by:

  • Providing competitive grants for pioneering cancer research and technology. These grants will fund collaborative research teams developing new approaches and technologies to advance early cancer detection, monitoring and treatment.
  • Establishing a program that brings international luminaries in the cancer field to U-M. These experts will develop new projects that will continue after they leave and help form a valuable collaborative network.
  • Providing support to retain or recruit dynamic researchers. These Cutting-edge scientists will pursue high-risk, high-reward projects.
  • Creating endowed professorships: Money will be tied to cancer research funds that convey U-M's commitment to discovery and innovation and allow for Scientific freedom.
  • Supporting the development of independent research careers. A cohort of promising new researchers made up of advanced postdoctoral cancer research scientists will be created.

The Rogal’s chose to support cancer research at U-M for many reasons. One is their personal experience with cancer. Both Richard and Susan have lost loved ones to cancer. Another reason is that few institutions have the breadth and depth of resources at U-M. These resources include a Medical School, College of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, and School of Nursing. Cancer Center members come from 53 departments across nine of U-M’s schools and colleges.

Richard Rogal, a University of Michigan (U-M) alumni says in an article for Michigan News, "I call Michigan 'Collaboration U' because so many different units work together to solve problems. We have the advantage of 97 graduate departments rated in the top 10 in the country. Putting all this brain power and excitement together is going to help us find a cure for cancer. It will make people's lives better, and that's the most important thing."

"This generous gift brings major new opportunities for our cancer center to dramatically increase the pace of generating important advances in the cancer field," Professor of Oncology Eric R. Fearon, M.D., Ph.D., Emanuel N. Maisel says in the same article. Fearon is also the director of the Michigan Cancer Center, which will soon be renamed the Rogel Cancer Center in honor of the Rogels' many years of giving and service to the university.

About the Michigan University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center:

  •  The Rogel Cancer Center was ranked No. 12 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report
  • It is consistently in the top 10 in research funding from the National Cancer Institute.
  • In 2017 U-M received 140 grants for a total of nearly $64 million in cancer research funding
  • It is one of only 49 cancer centers across the country designated "comprehensive" by the National Cancer Institute.

Laboratory equipment suppliers wishing to market their products to the well funded researchers of UM, Ann Arbor should plan on participating in The 18th Annual BioResearch Product Faire™ event at the University of Michigan which will be held on Thursday, August 9th, 2018. This is an excellent opportunity to meet face to face with life science researchers.

Last year, this event attracted nearly 500 attendees. Of these attendees, 161 were purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 82 were lab managers. While in the area, make the most of your marketing dollars by also participating at the Michigan State BioResearch Product Faire on Wednesday, August 8th, 2018
