University of Cincinnati Opens $6M Hybrid Operating Room

We often discuss research breakthroughs in heart health, like Ohio State’s gene therapy discovered earlier this year. To carry out such procedures requires state of the art equipment. It is with this mentality that the University of Cincinnati has opened an expanded, upgraded, “hybrid” operating room at their Medical Center.

“Why is it referred to as a hybrid operating room?” asks Satya Shreenivas, MD, (left, image courtesy UC) director of the structural heart program at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine in the UC College of Medicine. "Hybrid describes the integration of surgical and non-surgical expertise, as well as the inherent flexibility to respond to a patient’s specific need during the procedure.”

The new 854 square foot space will allow more room to safely carry out complicated procedures, such as trans-catheter aortic valve replacement. Shreenivas also believes that the larger space will help accommodate non-surgical procedures that rely on large, cumbersome devices. For example, the operating room will feature the newest model of the Artis zeego angiography C-arm system, which helps visualize the inside of blood vessels and organs.

"The cardiovascular community has reached a point where patients with advanced, complex heart valve disease can be offered surgical and non-surgical options to provide optimal care. The non-surgical procedures typically reduce hospital length of stay and overall recovery time,” Shreenivas explains in a recent University of Cincinnati press release.

"Our team approach to evaluation and treatment at UCMC is based on specialized training and clinical expertise. We believe that this is the formula for achieving great, individualized care.”

The expansion was made possible by a $6 million investment by UC Health. If funding information for the research at UC interests you, consider reading our free University of Cincinnati Funding Stats and Vendor Show Info report, accessible here:
