UC Irvine Breaks Research Funding Record

Written by Emily Olson | Fri, Sep 16, 2016

For fiscal year 2015-16, UC Irvine received $395 million in grants and contracts and $132.5 million in philanthropic gifts, breaking the university's previous funding records in both areas. Fundraising doubled from the previous fiscal year and funding from research grants and contracts increased by more than $100 million.

The area which saw the most growth in research funding was health, thanks to increased NIH funding as well as numerous private donations. Among these were:

    • $40 million gift from Sue and Bill Gross to set up a nursing school and world-class health science facility.
    • An $8 million grant to develop a new vaccine for Q fever with less side effects than current vaccines.
    • $19 million of NIH research funding granted to the university's Institute for Clinical & Translational Science to support various research endeavors such as diagnosing and treating cerebral palsy, exploring exercise's impact on Alzheimer’s disease, and creating new classes of drugs that kill cancer cells.

“Grant funding is the fuel that drives research and innovation... These considerable increases in support are an indication that UCI’s growing, world-class research enterprise will continue to make a greater impact both nationally and globally.” - Pramod Khargonekar, vice chancellor of research at UC Irvine.

With record breaking funding, UC Irvine is a strong marketplace for lab and chemical supply companies to find new scientific product sales leads. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. produces an annual BioResearch Product Faire™ event at UC Irvine in October that gives Irvine researchers the chance to find new products and technologies that will help them in their labs. Lab suppliers have the chance to meet with these researchers face-to-face in an intimate and professional environment to help researchers find the products they need.

The next event at UC Irvine, the 15th Semiannual BioResearch Product Faire™ Event, will take place on October 18, 2016. Both researchers and lab supply companies are invited to attend this popular trade fair event.
