The recent award was granted to researchers at the Center for Advanced Microscopy and Image Informatics (CAMII) core facility. CAMII is a multi-institutional facility, utilized by researchers from both Baylor College of Medicine and Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology, both located in Houston. Led by Dr. Michael A. Mancini and Dr. Peter J. Davies, the Houston-based core facility provides opportunities for life scientists to work collaboratively and share their expertise with the goal of developing new treatment methods.
Dr. Mancini, who serves as a professor at both institutions, explained that: “The investment from CPRIT is really important to grow our equipment resources, and the support of our scientific staff. The ability to rapidly image three-dimensional structures requires a new generation of imaging platforms; this grant will provide us with the resources and expertise we need to accelerate the scale and the scope of cancer-based drug discovery research.”
Through this new funding, CAMII will be able to purchase new and necessary lab equipment that will be available to researchers from a variety of institutions to use in their studies. Through this, researchers from all life science fields, including cell and molecular biology, will be able to further their studies into cancer biology that will ultimately benefit people around the world.
Research institutions throughout Texas receive millions of funding annually to support life science projects.
Life science researchers at these institutions use this funding to further ongoing research projects, to begin new research, and the establish new research centers and buildings. Two of these highly funded research institutions include the Texas Medical Center and Texas A&M University. Currently funded research projects at Texas institutions include:
