Microbiology Research, Life Science Market Opportunities at CU Boulder

Written by Leo Zlimen | Thu, May 24, 2018

Recent research at the University of Colorado, Boulder has focused on the effects that human gut microbes have on stress. One study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2017 found that mice injected with the bacterium Mycobacterium vaccae developed higher levels of an enzyme linked to serotonin production in the brain.

In 2016, a previous study at CU Boulder focused on how stress and sleep deprivation could influence the composition of the human microbiome. Researchers are optimistic that these findings could have widespread ramifications. In an article for Be Boulder, Professor Kenneth Wright mentioned: “If we can find ways to protect healthy gut microbiota, we may be able to improve the health and performance of people going about their daily lives.”

Potentially life-saving research projects of this kind are possible due to the thriving regional life science research and development community. In 2017, CU Boulder received $42.2 million from the NIH, and over 89 biotechnology startups have emerged from the university itself. Supplemented by three large bioscience research institutes, the life science market in the Boulder area is alive and well and should be on the radar of any lab supply company looking to capitalize on this emerging market.

Looking to promote and sell your lab supply products in this innovative and growing life science market?

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. will be hosting their 20th Annual BioResearch Product Faire at the University of Colorado, Boulder on July 18, 2018. This event will include principal investigators, lab managers, professors, postdocs, grad students, and purchasing agents.
