New Construction on Campus
Recently, the University of Pittsburgh has put a lot of resources towards renovating their facilities, including adding an additional 80,000 square feet to their Salk Hall building, and 22,000 square feet to the Benedum Hall. Additionally, UPitt committed $200M to renovate a century old building on Baum Blvd. into a world-class space for labs, offices, startup companies and industry partners.
This visionary institution plans to build 3 new hospitals over the next 5 years spending $2 billion: UPMC Vision and Rehabilitation Hospital, UPMC Heart and Transplant Hospital, and UPMC Hillman Cancer Hospital.
Researcher Who Discovered How Bacteria Communicate to Receive the 2018 Dickson Prize in Medicine
Bonnie Bassler, Ph.D., who is the Squibb Professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
will receive the University of Pittsburgh’s 2018 Dickson Prize in Medicine.
“Dr. Bassler’s work is truly groundbreaking,” said
Arthur S. Levine, M.D., Pitt’s senior vice chancellor for the health sciences and John and Gertrude Petersen Dean of Medicine. “When she began her scientific career, bacteria were typically thought of as single-celled organisms that act alone. She not only showed that bacteria communicate, she demonstrated that such communication enables groups of bacteria to essentially function as multicellular organisms. These insights have revolutionized the field of microbiology.”
