University of Texas Austin (UT)

The University of Texas Austin, the largest institution in the University of Texas system, has more than 150 research units and includes facilities such as the Center for Nano and Molecular Science and Technology, as well as those serving the areas of Computational Engineering and Sciences, and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. 

UT Austin receives millions of dollars each year in funding from private and public sources in the form of grants, awards, and donations: 

• 2012 Life Science R&D Expenditures: 111th Ranked = $73,512,000
• 2013 NIH Ranking: 94th Ranked = $51,242,696
• The Seton Healthcare Family is building a $295 million teaching hospital on the UT Austin campus that will be called the Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas and will be located across the street from the Dell Medical School. The Dell Medical School will welcome its first class of students in July 2016 and the hospital will begin operations in 2017.
• UT Austin is part of a $17 million collaboration to study and combat traumatic brain injuries.
• $12 million was awarded to the UT Austin by the US Department of Energy to curtail Greenhouse gas emissions.

The 2014, 4th annual BioResearch Product Faire™ event at UT Austin saw nearly 200 interested researchers: 39 were professors, post docs and purchasing agents and 23 were lab managers. The balance were research associates and postgraduate students, all looking for tools to use in their current and future research projects.

Texas A&M University (TAMU)

Texas A&M University in College Station is a constantly growing institution with a wide range and variety of research departments and programs, including biological and agricultural engineering, biomedical sciences, agri-genomics, and vascular biology, to name a few. 

With such a variety of research areas, many grants and awards come from all types of sources to assist with the diverse ongoing research the school performs: 

• 2012 Life Science R&D Expenditures: 59th Ranked = $217,734,000
• 2013 NIH Funding: 206th Ranked = $14,950,767 
• The Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing at TAMU was founded in 2012 with an initial, 5-year investment of $176.6 million from the U.S. government. It is likely that over the expected lifetime of 25 years, the federal contract to create the Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing will be worth $1.5 to $2 billion.
• Texas A & M University is constructing a new $120 million building as part of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, expected completion in 2016.
• Texas A&M is constructing a new $91 million pandemic influenza vaccine-manufacturing facility expected to be completed in late 2015.

Texas Medical Center (TMC)

The Texas Medical Center in Houston is the largest medical complex in the world, consisting of 21 renowned hospitals, 13 support organizations, 8 academic and research institutions, 6 nursing programs, 3 public health organizations, 3 medical schools, 2 universities, 2 pharmacy schools, and 1 dental school. 

Texas Medical Center Institutions consistently rank in the top 50 in terms of the amount of funding received from both the NIH and NSF, as well as receiving many private and public grants and awards: 

• 2012 Life Science R&D Expenditures: 
  - University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, 13th Ranked = $614,604,000
  - Baylor College of Medicine, 22nd Ranked = $474,700,000
  - University of Texas Southwestern Medical, 23rd Ranked = $435,085,000
  
• 2013 NIH Funding: 
  - Baylor College of Medicine: 29th Ranked = $179,371,102

• The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center will spend $198 million on constructing a hospital expansion and renovating existing hospital space. The expansion will add 185,000 square feet, and 110,000 square feet will be renovated. The expansion is expected to be complete by the end of 2015.
• A $75 million 5-year Department of Defense grant given to bioengineers at Rice University and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
• An $8.4 million, 4-year grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute has been awarded to the Baylor College of Medicine.
