As you can see from the map below, Longwood Medical Area contains many different teaching, specialty and general medical centers and hospitals. Longwood Medical Area's research programs include some of the leading centers for the discovery of new medical technologies.
The Joslin Diabetes Center, is an educational research based center dedicated to finding ways to beat diabetes:
"OUR VISION: A world free of diabetes and its complications"
"OUR MISSION: To prevent, treat and cure diabetes"
(Joslin Diabetes Center and Joslin Clinic)
Founded by Elliot P. Joslin, M.D., and located in the Longwood Medical Area, the Joslin Diabetes Center has discovered some of the most important and ground-breaking diabetes breakthroughs. Researchers at this center perform both clinical and basic research with the sole purpose of curing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Part of Joslin's incredible center is the Diabetes Research and Endocrinology Research Center (DRC). This center is designed to support research while simultaneously encouraging the development of young scientists.
The Joslin's Clinical Research Center (CRC) where many clinical studies are conducted is also in the Longwood Medical Area. The close relationship between the Joslin Diabetes Center and the Harvard Medical School allows the researchers at these two institutions to collaborate extensively.
The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the Longwood Medical Area is focused on providing comfort and care to children and adults with cancer. The doctors and researchers constantly work on the prevention, diagnosis, treatments, understanding, and eventually the cure for cancer. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute also works to train the future generations of physicians and scientists. However the ultimate goal of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is to completely eliminate cancer all together.
Dr. Sidney Farber, founder of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, established a place for top of the line treatment and care, also dedicated to new discoveries in cancer research. The researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute work in many areas, such as: Translational Research, Immunology, DNA repair, and Metabolic Regulation.
