Washington University Research: Four Points of Interest

1) Genome Institute awarded $114 million for research

2) Research awards for 2011 surpassed $706 million

3) Top rankings in 2011 according to the US News and World Report

4) New state-of-the art building for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

 

1) Washington University Genome Institute recently awarded $114 million

 

  • This money awarded by a division of the National Institute of Health  called the National Human Genome Research Institute.
  • Researchers at the Genome Institute at Washington University were among the first to identify a cancer causing genetic error in a human patient.
  • Some of the research conducted at the institute is part of the Cancer Genome Atlas project. 

 

2) Washington University Research awards for 2011 surpassed $706 million

 

  • $105 million came from the American Recovery Act.
  • $535 million came from Federal funding which accounts for most of the university’s research awards

 

3) Washington University Rankings in 2011 according to the US News and World Report

 

  • Ranked 14th overall for universities in the United States
  •  Ranked 4th overall for medical schools in the United States.
  • Ranked 11th among universities in the nation for Biological Sciences.
  •  Ranked 33rd among universities in the nation for Chemistry.

 

4) Washington University New state-of-the art building for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences

 

  • Named the Preston M. Green Hall because of an alumnus who dedicated $8 million for the building
  • Boasts 83,849 square feet with 17 laboratories.
