UCSB Center for Energy Efficient Materials Research Overview

UCSB's Center for Energy Efficient Materials (CEEM) was launched in August 2009 with $19million in funding from the Dept. of Basic Energy Sciences, a branch of the DOE. CEEM's mission is to help solve some of the world's most pressing energy problems, drawing on UCSB's strength in materials science research.

CEEM's current focus is on designing:

• More efficient and lower-cost solar cells
• Longer-lasting and higher-capacity batteries
• More-efficient solid state lighting
• New thermoelectric devices to convert heat to electricity

CEEM is a collaborative, interdisciplinary enterprise at UCSB, its researchers working with colleagues at:

• National Renewable Energy Laboratory
• Los Alamos National Laboratory
• UC Santa Cruz
• Harvard University

CEEM is a branch of UCSB's Institute for Energy Efficiency (IEE).   IEE is organized into 6 groups aimed at finding solutions to 6 key energy challenges:

• Lighting
• Production and Storage
• Buildings and Design
• Computing
• Electronics and Photonics
• Economics and Policy

One of the major events sponsored by IEE is the annual Santa Barbara Summit on Energy Efficiency, held on April 26-27 in 2011.
