Sell Lab Products at Well-Funded Southern California Schools

Lab suppliers working to sell lab products and life science products in southern California will want to take note of the most recent funding statistics at the University of California, Irvine; the University of California, San Diego; the University of California, Los Angeles; and the University of California, Riverside. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. organizes a number of well-attended life science marketing events at these schools that lab suppliers may want to consider reserving spaces at after reading about the following funding news.

In 2012, the NIH gave the University of California, Irvine $127.1 million in research funding. The top funded life science department was microbiology, which received 20 awards totaling $14.6 million. In 2011, the NIH also ranked the University of California Irvine 49th in the nation for direct plus indirect costs in the life sciences, excluding R&D contracts and ARRA awards. The total figure that year was $119.9 million. In 2012, the University of California, San Diego was awarded $395 million by the NIH, while the University of California, Los Angeles received $367.2 million.

In 2011, the NIH ranked the University of California, San Diego 7th in the country for direct plus indirect costs in the life sciences, excluding R&D contracts and ARRA awards. The total costs were $396.2 million. The top-funded department at UCLA in 2012 was internal medicine, which received 149 awards totaling $92.1 million. The University of California, Riverside also received $14 million from the NIH in 2012. In addition to receiving NIH funding, the University of California, Irvine also received $38 million from the NSF in 2012. The NSF awarded the University of California, San Diego $70 million and the University of California, Los Angeles $58.4 million in 2012. In 2009, the NSF ranked the University of California, Los Angeles 8th in the country for total R&D expenditures in the life sciences. The total expenditures that year were $657.6 million. The University of California, Riverside received $18.8 million from the NSF in 2012 as well.
