New York Life Science Marketing Events Approaching

Written by Jennifer Nieuwkerk | Fri, Jul 26, 2013

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc.’s Rockefeller University life science marketing events are held twice a year, and our second event is coming up quickly on October 2nd, 2013. Rockefeller University is a research powerhouse in New York whose main research areas include biochemistry, structural biology, immunology, virology, microbiology, medical sciences, and molecular cell and developmental biology. According to the Rockefeller Universtiy website, the university has 72 laboratories that conduct cutting edge research. Rockefeller University also received a $2.5 million NIH award, a grant renewal that has allowed researchers to continue their studies of chemotherapeutic responsiveness in cancer.

“Working in breast cancer, we recently discovered a set of human microRNAs that strongly suppress metastasis in a robust mouse model of breast cancer. These microRNAs act as biomarkers since their expression levels in primary tumors predict future metastatic relapse, thus guiding clinical decision-making,” the project’s abstract said. “Through a multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and highly innovative approach that integrates molecular, in vitro, in vivo, and human clinical analyses, we propose to discover specific microRNA biomarkers that will empower clinicians to identify patients whose tumors will display resistance to standard chemotherapy for colorectal cancer. The identification of such biomarkers will save thousands of patients annually from ineffective treatment and make them eligible for alternative and experimental therapies.”

Lab suppliers marketing university lab equipment and interested in increasing lab sales leads in New York may want to take note of Rockefeller University’s wealth of research funding. According to recent NIH and NSF research funding statistics, Rockefeller was awarded $70.9 million in 2012. The NIH gave Rockefeller University $70.1 million in 2012. This research funding was distributed among research projects in various departments at the university. The best funded life science department was internal medicine, which received 4 awards totaling $4.3 million. For the full list of departments receiving NIH funding organized by department name, number of awards received and total funding awarded, please visit the NIH website.

In addition to receiving funding from the NIH, Rockefeller University also received $844,385 from the NSF in 2012. $256,208 of that funding went towards a project researching the dynamics of nuclear pore proteins and their mechanism of transport. In 2009, the NSF also ranked Rockefeller University 51st in the country for total R&D expenditures in the life sciences, the total being $233.7 million.
