Eight small companies in Michigan have received $15 million in grants that will allow them to participate in research projects with leading universities in the state of Michigan. The grants were awarded in early 2012 and will continue over the next three to five years. Participating universities include Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, Michigan Technological University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, Western Michigan University, plus the University Research Corridor.
According to a Grand Rapids Business Journal article, the grant program will help put small firms in contact with the state of Michigan’s leading research universities, which will help to bring new technologies to fruition and commercialization.
“The usual model is that university researchers create intellectual property and then the university attempts to find a partner” for commercialization, said Mark Gurney, a Ph.D. from Caltech with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Gurney added that “in this case, it’s the opposite direction.”

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor is one of the best-funded universities in the nation for life science research, as recent NIH and NSF research funding statistics suggest. In 2012, the NIH gave the University of Michigan $458.5 million in research funding. The funding has been awarded to various departments for life science research projects including anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, biophysics, biostatistics and microbiology. In addition to receiving NIH funding, the University of Michigan also received $80.3 million from the NSF in 2012.
From the statistics above, it’s clear that lab suppliers hoping to market university lab equipment and increase lab sales leads don’t want to miss out on getting to know the market at Michigan life science marketing events. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites all biotechnology vendors and lab suppliers to network with science researchers, lab managers and purchasing agents at our next East Lansing BioResearch Product Faire™ Front Line Event on July 17, 2013 and our Ann Arbor BioResearch Product Faire™ Event on July 18, 2013.
