Life Science Center Creates Thriving Market in Boston

Written by Jennifer Nieuwkerk | Fri, Jun 28, 2013

While the biotechnology and medical-device industries are growing as a whole nationwide, Massachusetts added over 8,000 jobs in these sectors in the past five years. Even more interestingly, the life science industry’s employment rate has increased 12% across the country since 2000, but Massachusetts’ grew at a rate exceeding twice that number. The Massachusetts Life Science Center has a great deal to do with life science employment in the Boston area. Lawmakers continue to fund the center generously given its healthy economic impact on the state.

Located 20 minutes outside of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Life Science Center is just a short drive away from Harvard University, another life science industry powerhouse. The Life Science Center and Harvard University together create a valuable market for lab suppliers interested in marketing life science solutions and increasing scientific product sales leads at Boston life science marketing events.

According to The Boston Globe, the Life Science Center has a lot more going for it than increased job growth in the life sciences. After the state spent $360 million on the center, it has generated $1 billion in spending by private companies. As of today, eight out of 10 of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world now do business in Massachusetts.

Lab suppliers interested in marketing life science solutions and increasing scientific product sales leads in Boston will find a well-funded market in Boston, especially taking into account most recent NIH and NSF research funding statistics for Harvard University. In 2012, Harvard University received $392 million in research funding from the NIH. The funding was spread out over a number of life science departments at the university. For a full list of departments receiving funding organized by department name, number of awards received and total funding awarded, please visit the NIH website.

In addition to receiving a great deal of funding from the NIH, Harvard University also received $55.3 million in research funding from the NSF in 2012. The funding was distributed among individual projects in multiple life science research fields. Of the total funding, $6.9 million went to life science projects alone. The life science departments receiving funding included evolutionary processes, developmental systems, molecular biophysics, ecosystem science, systematics and biodiversity science, population and community ecology, bio informatics, genetic mechanisms, and cellular dynamics and function.

Given the success of the Massachusetts Life Science Center and the research funding Harvard University received from the NIH and NSF, it’s clear that Boston is a rich market for lab suppliers interested in marketing life science solutions and increasing scientific product sales leads at Boston life science marketing events. Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. invites all lab suppliers to network with post docs, lab managers and purchasing agents at our Boston BioResearch Product Faire™ Event. Last year’s Boston BioResearch Product Faire™ Event attracted a crowd of 50% purchasing agents, professors and post docs, and 15% lab managers and directors. Attendees came from 35 different research buildings and 49 departments around campus.
