The center has an annual budget of 14 billion dollars. This is a collaborative medical complex with 54 member institutions comprised of 26 government agencies and 26 health related non-profit private institutions. The complex employs more than 90,000 people with 7,000 being scientists, researchers, and students. The campus sprawls over a massive 1,300 acres with 4.5 million square feet spread over 280 buildings. In fact, in 2011, the Houston facility received over 200 million in grants from the NIH.

Texas Medical Center is on the fore-front of medical care and research by always seeking ways to improve itself. The center has recently appointed a new president, Giuseppe Colasurdo, M.D. to run this state of the art facility. Before this appointment Dr. Colasurado, had been serving as the Interim President since April 1, 2011. According to UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, “It is critically important to have extraordinary leadership at our health institutions as the landscape of health care in our country undergoes transformational change. Dr. Colasurdo is an exemplary educator, administrator and clinician, and I have no doubt he is the right leader at the right time.”

The Texas Medical center has just welcomed two new member institutions into it’s medical complex, increasing its number of member institutions to 54. The new institutions added are The Menninger Clinic and the University of Houston-Victoria School of Nursing. With these two institutions TMC adds more nursing and psychiatric services to its already high quality medical complex.
Moreover, the doors have just opened to a new medical center aimed at better serving the needs of its patients. The new facility is called the Digestive Disease Center and is located in the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza. The center will be housed in a 22,000-square-foot, cutting edge, facility on the 14th floor. Its purpose is to diagnose and treat patients with all forms of digestive tract and liver disorders.
