Science Marketing: Facebook Advertising

Posted by BCI Staff on Fri, Jul 13, 2012

Ahh, the world of science marketing... it all used to be so simple.

All you had to was make a nice ad, publish it in one of the three top science periodicals, then send your sales representative off to go door to door at a few laboratories.

Now, there's the brave new world of inbound marketing, social networking, search engine opimization, adwords advertising, links, linkedin, facebook, pinterest, and a plethora of other electronic, social and personal ways to reach out and connect with the marketplace.

With new technology comes new opportunity, but also new responsibility.

What's best now? What works at all? How much money does it take to figure out what works and what doesn't? Of course, it depends.

Facebook at the outside seems so cheap and so easy especially when compared to adwords, or linked in.  You can target your ads by interest and geography, put in spending limits, and voila! However, remember that there are countless ads, pages and companies on Facebook. Here are some tips to increase your Facebook success rate:

  • Select ad colors that contrast the Facebook blue.
      • This will help them stand out more.
  • Select face ads instead of purely textual ones.
      • Faces are more attractive than words.
  • Start with small groups.
      • It's easier to build up trust and following in a small setting.
  • If it's not drawing leads in 48 hours, then try something different.
      • Waiting does not improve results on Facebook.
  • Start with a small daily spend to see how the ad works.
      • As the old saying goes, don't put all your eggs in one basket.
  • Monitor your account daily and tweak as needed.
      • Facebook is a constantly changing marketplace, so be a constantly adapting seller.

Facebook is a wonderful resource if you know how to use it. Hopefully these tips will help you become more prominent and successful in your Facebook endeavors. Good luck out there, and remember to "Like" Biotechnology Calendar when you see us!
