$10M Donated to Ohio State to Establish New Center for Brain Health

With the assistance of a recent $10 million contribution to Ohio State University, donors Stan and Joan Ross are helping to establish the Stanley D. and Joan H. Ross Center for Brain Health and Performance. Once open, this center will coincide with the Brain and Spine Hospital currently being constructed at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center that is slated to open in 2016. The Center for Brain Health and Performance will focus on research and education in the field of brain health. In the United States alone, over 50 million people suffer from illnesses associated with the brain, spine, and nervous system, including Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, strokes, and spinal cord injuries. 

“The concept of brain health is far reaching and not limited to those afflicted with neurological disorders. Optimizing our brain health and function is important throughout our lives, from youth to advanced age. This innovative center will use research and neuroscience to regain, retain, and optimize brain health and performance for people of all ages," explained Columbus neurosurgeon and researcher Dr. Ali Rezai. 

Once established, this new Center for Brain Health and Performance will help further establish Columbus, OH as a leader in neurological and biomedical research. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is already a leader in health care performance and research in the Columbus area. Current facilities at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center include: 

  • Biomedical Research Tower
  • Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center
  • Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute
  • James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute 
  • OSU Harding Hospital
  • Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital 
  • University Hospital

Ohio State University is a multi-million dollar research marketplace, continuously receiving large amounts of funding from public and private donors to support ongoing life science research.In the 2014 fiscal year, Ohio State received over $132 million in funding from the NIH, and total life science R&D expenditures exceeded $454.5 million in 2013.

Current funding at Ohio State is being used to support research and establish new research centers, including: 

  • RELATED ARTICLES: 
    The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science has been awarded $25.4 million by the NIH in order to accelerate discoveries which lead to advances in medicine.
  • $19 million was raised for the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, to support a fellowship program, student researchers, "idea grants" - which support research teams, and acquisition and retention of leading cancer researchers and programs.
  • Ohio State University received an $8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to complete the unfinished fourth floor of the university's Biomedical Research Tower. The finished building will provide research facilities for projects relating to cardiovascular and lung disease, biology, biotechnology and biomedical informatics programs, cancer and cancer genetics.
