Top Vet Schools Conduct Millions in NIH-backed Research in 2015

From disease research to trauma care and everything in between, the field of veterinary medicine encompasses many areas, all of which require access to modern lab equipment and technology. 

Below is a list of four of the nation’s top research universities for veterinary sciences, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These are highly-funded universities with extremely active veterinarians, clinicians, lab workers and other highly respected researchers. Texas A&M University, College Station TX

2015 NIH Funding: 148 Awards, $43,727,823        

2015 NIH Veterinary Sciences Funding: 25 Awards, $5,949,217

  •          Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine receives over $14 million in annual R&D funding.
  •          The CVM has cloned more species than any other academic institution (deer, cat, cow, horse, pig, and goat) and leads the way in conservation genomics.
  •          A number of labs and centers conducting research in various disciplines are housed at the CVM, such as the Clinical Pathology Lab, the DNA Technologies Core Lab, Image Analysis Lab, the Reproductive Science Lab, the Sayes Group Lab, the Center for Environmental and Rural Health (CERH), and the National Center for Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease (FAZD).

University Of Minnesota, Twin Cities

2015 NIH Funding: 525 Awards, $238,932,303      

2015 NIH Veterinary Sciences Funding: 15 Awards, $3,045,917

  •          U of Minnesota CVM is home to 9 leading laboratories, including the Neuromuscular Diagnostic Laboratory, the Equine Genetics and Genomics lab, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
  •          UM veterinary researchers are currently conducting highly-funded research studies in the areas of infectious disease, genomics, comparative medicine, raptor conservation, public health, epidemiology and dairy, swine, and avian medicine.
  •          UM CVM employs over 150 faculty and houses over 400 students involved in over 55,000 annual laboratory cases and research projects.

Michigan State University, East Lansing MI

2015 NIH Funding: 147 Awards, $49,714,557        

2015 NIH Veterinary Sciences Funding: 7 Awards, $2,219,946

  •          In addition to the Veterinary Medical Center, the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine has many specialized centers, including The Matilda R. Wilson Pegasus Critical Care Center for horses and the Center for Feline Health and Wellbeing.
  •          MSU reported 2013 Life Science R&D Expenditures of over $258 million.
  •          The 170,000 square-foot College of Veterinary Medicine includes four biomedical science, two clinical, two service units, and several research centers.

Ohio State University, Columbus OH

2015 NIH Funding: 360 Awards, $136,022,627      

2015 NIH Veterinary Sciences Funding: 11 Awards, $2,868,686

  •          Ohio State’s Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences combines the 17 veterinary departments, including Cardiology and Interventional Medicine, and Diagnostic and Clinical Microbiology.
  •          Ohio State University recently received a $21 million investment from the Ohio Third Frontier to create a consortium of groups, termed the Neurotechnology Innovations Translator.
  •          OSU is home to the 133 acre Alice Lloyd Finley Memorial Veterinary Research Farm for large farm animals.
