Three active scientists from Stony Brook have recently received funding in recognition of their hard work and to show continued support of scientific research.
The awards, which amount to $150,000 apiece, will support 1 year of each researcher’s work, and was given by the SUNY (Stony Brook University, New York) Health Network of Excellence awards to “further clinical investigation of critical areas in medicine affecting populations nationally and globally”.
According to their website, the SUNY awards represent a part of the Networks’ mission to maximize SUNY’s diverse health-related assets to support basic, clinical, and public health research.
The recipients of these three awards include:
Ellen Li, MD, PhD, Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine. Dr Li is studying the racial and ethnic differences in gastrointestinal cancer biology.
Jorge Benach, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor, Chair of the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, and an internationally recognized researcher on the cause of Lyme disease. Dr. Benach is leading a comprehensive study of the chronic outcomes of Lyme disease.
Susmita Pati, MD, MPH, is a nationally recognized population health outcomes researcher, Associate Professor, and Chief of the Division of Primary Care Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Dr. Pati is using “big data” to improve primary care delivery and reduce health disparities for children at high risk of poor health outcomes.
The SUNY Health Network of Excellence assembles scientists, scholars and external partners from SUNY campuses to conduct collaborative research in high demand areas. The network is one of six SUNY Networks of Excellence.
In addition to these three prominent medical researchers, Stony Brook University is home to hundreds of active and well-funded scientists across a variety of scientific fields, including researchers from:

These researchers make use of millions of dollars in research equipment and lab supplies every year during the course of their studies, and can find new supplies at the annual BioResearch Product Faire™ at Stony Brook University.
Last year, 200 of SUNY’s leading researchers joined us for this industry-leading life science event to network and discover the latest in lab equipment and supplies.
If you are involved in life science research at Stony Brook, don’t miss this opportunity for your lab to benefit from all this free show has to offer. For more information about attending the 10th Annual BioResearch Product Faire™ at Stony Brook University, on September 28, 2015, click below:
