Course - Island of Spetses, Greece
Our 2015 course (The VII Spetses NR Summer School) aims to provide young scientists an integrated view on recent advances in understanding nuclear receptor signalling pathways, from molecular mechanisms to physiology and disease, and vice versa. Nuclear Receptors are crucial signal-dependent transcription factors that control nearly every aspect of development, physiology and disease by acting as sensors for small-molecule hormones, metabolites, nutrients, environmental compounds and synthetic drugs. With many exciting discoveries the field has demonstrated how basic biomedical research leads to insights into complex disease mechanisms, to pharmacological development and to clinical applications.
The course comprises 16 internationally renowned lecturers (senior and junior leaders) and 60 students (Ph.D. students, postdocs). Key aspects of nuclear receptor signalling will be introduced by lectures and followed up by informal discussions during workshops, poster sessions, and tutorials. Particular emphasis will be on student-based activities and interactions to stimulate the scientific dialogue and to create a unique familiar and inspiring atmosphere. Besides, the wonderful Island of Spetses offers an idyllic surrounding with excellent recreational possibilities, ancient Greek culture, bars and restaurants with superb cuisine to affordable prices.
